The Design Process
Each individual silver jewelry design is first rendered in legalized fossil walrus ivory. The ivory is hand carved by Jim into a one-of-a-kind miniature sculpture of sorts. The fossil walrus ivory that is used can be as much as thousands of years old and is the best medium for clarity in the jewelry design. The hand carving process is very time consuming, as most of Jim's silver pendants, silver earrings or other creations have a high degree of minute detail. Some of the miniature sculptures designed for silver jewelry can take up to a hundred hours or more of detailed hand carving.
Lost-wax Casting
After each individual design is rendered in ivory, it is then molded for the lost-wax casting process. The lost-wax casting process, also known by its French name of cire perdue refers to the ancient practice by which a metal is cast from an artist's sculpture, such as unique silver jewelry is cast from Jim's hand carved miniature ivory sculptures. Wax is used along with the ivory carving to create the template for each piece of sterling silver jewelry. The individual design is then cast in silver to create a custom made masterpiece. Each individual design of unique silver jewelry in the Jim Garrick collection is created independently of other designs and is never mass-produced for a truly exceptional experience.
