One of a Kind Netsuke Sculptures by Jim Garrick
Jim's fascination with Japanese miniature carvings began in 1969 when he came across netsuke sculptures in Okinawa while serving in the Marine Corps.
In 1976, Jim started carving with a pocket knife as a hobby. Over time, his carving skill grew. Jim started creating miniature sculptures in 1990 while incarcerated. His hand carved pieces have since gained widespread recognition and won numerous awards (see home page).
In 1999 Jim's ivory supplier, Roland Quimby gave him a book on netsuke and suggested he send a sample of his work to Michael Spindell LTD gallery in New York. That piece was sold to a collector for $2500 (that was a bargain!) and served as the catalyst for Jim's love of netsuke. Jim's netsuke sculptures were featured in the Michael Spindell Gallery for over 2 years.
Each miniature sculpture requires up to several hundred hours of hand carving.
Today, there are only a handful of artists in the world who create these intricate works of art. Jim Garrick's complete netsuke collection consists of only 10 one-of-a-kind sculptures. In addition to the collection available in the on line gallery, Jim offers custom sculptures and jewelry.
