Jim started making positive changes in 1993, when he decided he was going to fight for his life and refused to throw it all away. He volunteered to undergo drug and alcohol abuse treatment. He learned and implemented strategies to make better choices for his life, including breaking relationships and connections with drug using or drug related influences. His newfound clear thinking fueled a spiritual growth that flourished in his new clean and sober lifestyle. He began to develop a deep spiritual connection to family and friends who had all but given up on him. His relationships were restored and strengthened by the resolve to make better choices and become a better human being.
In 1993, Jim won his first award for one of his hand carved masterpieces. Since then, his works of art and unique silver jewelry have gained extensive recognition and won several prestigious awards. Jim was very encouraged by the positive turns his life was taking. He re-focused on education and learned how to use a computer. In 1999, on the advice of his ivory supplier, Jim Garrick submitted a sample of his netsuke sculptures to a New York art gallery. His works were exhibited there for over two years. He began creating unique sterling silver jewelry that also came to be regarded as works of art.
Jim was released from prison in 2007 for the evident transformation he had undergone and the associated "good behavior." He is enthusiastic about his sculptures and is looking forward to making a positive impact on people's lives through his art and unique silver jewelry. He is also focused on making meaningful contributions to society by working with mentoring programs for ex offenders.
The Thief on the Cross
The story behind this incomparable piece of silver jewelry starts with a painful past and ends in the commission of a lifetime - from a childhood friend. Learn about how Jim's faith inspired not only his art, but also his actions. The Thief on the Cross is a magnificent silver cross that represents the image of the thief who accepted Jesus as they were being crucified together. The Lord told him, "This day you shall be with me in paradise!" The intricately designed silver cross is a symbol of the hope Jesus Christ offers to each of us.
Netsuke Carvings
The lost Japanese art of netsuke (or netski) consists of tiny, hand carved sculptures. Jim became fascinated with this art form when he found some netsuke sculptures in Okinawa in 1969. He has been developing his hand carving skill since 1976 and has since become known as one of a handful of artists who practice the ancient art of netsuke. Jim's interest in netsuke has also influenced his unique silver jewelry designs. Each miniature sculpture requires up to several hundred hours of detailed hand carving.
